The Beast Within (1982) reveals itself. |
The first post, Movies At Dog Farm Retrospective: The Beast Within (1982), tackles an atmospheric and all but forgotten creature feature that I fondly recall seeing for the first time in the waning days of the old Skyline Drive-In. I'm proud to say that this is my first (and thus far, only) post ever submitted and accepted by IMDB as an external link. To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever clicked on it.
The second post, Best Of The Big Lots Bargain Bin - Paul Bartel's Private Parts (1972), sings the praises of one of my all time favorite "finds". Since I somehow managed to make it to the ripe old age of 40+ without ever hearing a single word about it, I assume it probably slipped beneath a lot of other radars, too. That's a shame, because its evocation of time and place is spot on. It also bears a pervy and yet darkly comedic tone that I think perhaps director Bartel strained a bit too hard to achieve in later projects.

Be sure to check back again next week for more of The Dog Farm's Best In Show 2013.
I like The Beast Within too, but my biggest guilty horror pleasures are The Dark Power and Ghosthouse.
ReplyDeleteIs that The Dark Power from 1985? Wow, IMDB makes that sound terrible in the best possible way. lol I've never seen Ghosthouse, either. I believe I'll watch one or the other (if I can find them) this afternoon.
DeleteThe plot capsulization of The Dark Power brings to mind The Manitou (1978). I've yet to do a post on it, but I love The Manitou even though I know I shouldn't.
I hope you like Ghosthouse. It is the best Italian Evil Dead ripoff out there. As for The Dark Power, all it can do is amuse, but it does if you're in the right mood!
DeleteI'm enjoying seeing these old dogs, but I can't wait for the new batch to start rolling out of the farm!
ReplyDeleteI hope all is well, and that you aren't working too hard. Did you decorate a little yet?
Adrienne put up a small tree, and of course, I've already gotten a few things to put under it for Gunnar . It's been a relatively mild holiday so far. Watched Europa Report last night. Really liked it. Adrienne stayed awake for the whole thing (she doesn't like sci-fi, remember?) I've been jotting down different ideas for posts, and it's going to be a long year. lol
DeleteI haven't seen The Beast Within, I don't think. But I love Motel Hell! Farmer Vincent's smoked meats, so awesome. Any sausage maker donning a pig's head wielding a chainsaw works for me. Words to live by...Don't harvest the humans until they're ripe. haha. Thanks Brandon. Took me back. lol
ReplyDeleteMy dad got me two old lobby cards for Motel Hell for Christmas last year, as well as two for House Of Exorcism. Also got an original Amityville 3D poster and (better) an original poster for The Sentinel. It would be unrealistic to think he may do that well again this year, but who knows?
DeleteDear old Dad! Two lobby cards for Motel Hell! Sheez! That would be hard to beat. But, it sounds like he's up to the challenge. Can't wait to hear what you get for Christmas Brandon! hah. Good stuff.
DeleteOh, and I went to IMDB to click on your "external link". Do I need the full fledged IMDB subscription to see it? Cause I couldn't find it. And sheez, you need at least one person to click on it to get the ball rolling. Might as well be me! Please advise....haha
ReplyDeleteIf you click on User Reviews on the movie's main page, it will take you to a page full of reviews with a sideboard to the left. In the sideboard under Awards & Reviews is a link for External Reviews. If you click that there's an alphabetical list of 58 external reviews. It's there. It only links to the same post you've already read here at the Dog Farm, though, so no real reward for doing so. It's not hard to imagine why it's never been clicked. lol
DeleteWoot! Found it and Clicked on it! Aw hell, Brandon, no real reward? Well, I think it's pretty darn cool. You deserve an award! Or at least a Leg Lamp! Afterall, it is that time of year. lol
